Report: Celtics in ‘lead position’ for Rudy Fernandez

From CelticsBlog.com‘s Tom Halzack:

The Boston Celtics are currently in the ‘lead position’ in negotiations with the Portland Trailblazers for Rudy Fernandez, according to a source. They have been in serious discussions since yesterday.

Other teams interested including New York and Chicago, but the Celtics are apparently getting the first shot, thus allowing one to assume they are a preferred destination, either in terms of desirability for Rudy or trading pieces for the Blazers.

Now this may be good news for Celtics fans and bad news for Rudy fans. This news however makes my eyebrows rise up. Taking a look at Boston’s roster, I’m not seeing much that Portland would get out of it. Boston would be an ideal spot for Rudy to be a major contributor off the bench considering the void left by Tony Allen. I see why he would want to go there. Still questionable on Portland’s end. Could this be for Sheed’s Expiring Contract? (Hell no). I can’t even let my mind wander there. I’d have a better chance at explaining Inception to a sorority girl on a Saturday night. …but if so, would that be irony or poetic justice? It looks like this could be a deal for future first-round picks or involve players with non-guaranteed deals. We’ll keep you posted as developments come out. Would you trade Rudy to the Celtics for picks, or try and get more?

How about Avery Bradley + a 1st round pick in 2011 or 2012 + Sheed’s expiring contract for

Ideally that would be a great trade. The expiring contracts wash out, although trading one of the ultimate Blazer fan favorites (Big Joel) for Sheed might be negative karma. Or just making a Blazer fans head explode. And I’m a Sheed guy. Bradley’s got talent and the log-jam might help his development. I don’t see Boston parting with their rookie for Rudy.
