The big news of the day: Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis testing positive for a “testosterone-producing substance” and being suspended 10 games. Here’s the Orlando Sentinel’s report and ESPN’s story. Lewis stated it was an “over the counter supplement” that he mixed in to make smoothies.
I made this post more to put out an opinion than anything. I don’t think there was any malice involved on Rashard Lewis’ part and believe it was truly an innocent mistake. And for any fan to try and take something away from his season or the Magic’s season because of this is borderline ignorant. This is eerily similar to when Lindsey Hunter failed a drug test. Nowhere near Big Papi or Manny Ramirez type level. Plus, check out this quote from the Orlando Sentinel:
Dr. Gary Wadler, Chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List and Methods Sub-Committee,
“DHEA is a compound which converts to androstenedione, Andro from the McGwire days, and that in turn converts into testosterone,” Wadler said. “…It is very widely used in supplemental and complementary kind of medicines and it’s in food stores.”
As for DHEA’s performance-enhancing capabilities, Wadler said the drug is “not very effective.”
Not. Very. Effective. Case-closed if you ask me. Lewis made a mistake, will take his punishment and we will move on. Boom, nailed it.
