Rumor has it that Anderson Varejao of the Cavs is looking to opt out of his contract. “He’s a 4 man, Portland should get him right?”
Four reasons, two of them are personal and two of them are actually valid. He’s a flopping machine and he has Sideshow Bob hair. Now that I got that out of the way, to the valid reasons. He doesn’t add everything Portland needs, at all if you ask me. He’s physical, he bangs, he plays good defense…but offensively he is just the definition of a non-option. I cringe everytime he looks to shoot the ball and I’m not even a Cleveland fan. Could you imagine being a Cleveland fan and seeing him about to shoot a mid-range jumper or make a post move? This is my thinking. When Channing Frye would shoot his jumpers I’d scream out ‘no!’ and he can make them. If Varejao was on the team shooting I wouldn’t make it past the All-Star Break. Anytime he looks to score it just seems like a nightmare. Not that he can’t score in the post, but if you’re running your offense through Varejao…you’ve got some issues. The defense is practically saying thank you. Plus, no way you could put Varejao and Pryzbilla on the floor together.
And the last reason: price tag. From Bob Finnan of the News-Herald (its the link I posted in the first sentence):
“Forward/center Anderson Varejao is expected to opt out of his contract by June 30. Every indication is that they want to re-sign him. One league source said he might settle for a four-year, $32 million deal.”
Let me get my calculator, I’m no math major. 32….divided by 4…..$8 million dollars a year. For Anderson Varejao. And he’s “settling” for that. I don’t think I need to say much more than this….Oh hell to the nah.
